VC 17: Update from Interlux

VC 17: Update from Interlux

By: KurtComments: 1

Earlier this fall, Interlux quietly announced the discontinuation of the very popular antifouling paint VC17. This came as a shock to many boaters in the Great Lakes as VC17 is by far one of the most popular antifouling paints. Since that time, Interlux has finally released a statement regarding the discontinuation of VC17.

You can view the document here.

To summarize, Interlux acknowledges the inconvenience that discontinuing VC17 has caused and is providing advice on what to do next.

After internal testing, it looks like VC Offshore has proven to be compatible with existing VC17 bottoms. Boaters will need to sand the existing VC17 with 120 grit sandpaper and then clean with Special Thinner 216 before applying VC Offshore. Fogh Boat Supplies will be stocking VC Offshore in 2024.

Unfortunately it looks like that legislation has led Interlux to discontinue VC17 in Canada. At this time, there are no equivalent paints except VC Offshore. I wouldn't be surprised if Interlux releases a new version of VC 17 in the near future, but that is all just speculation at this point.

I thought this was in Europe only due to stronger legislation on chemical products? WW used to have a Vc17m EXTRA as well with more potential regarding antifouling. Do you have that or and equivalent in the US?
